The Smithsonian building is inspired by a wind-and-water carved canyon.

From the start, it was supposed to be different. A distinct type of building. A new type of function. A true partnership with the people whose culture it attempts to chronicle. The National Museum of the American Indian wanted all of these things -- and something else, too. "I want [visitors] to look at the place and know they're in a native space." says Richard West, director of the Smithsonian Institution's newest museum, which opened Sept. 21 on the National Mall.
