Lately I've been fielding (and blogging on) lots of typical career questions and concerns, but have also been stunned to realize the strong interest in SAP consulting and development positions. Apparently, ERP is an area where things are hopping and popping in general (lots of interest in JD Edwards, PeopleSoft, and SoftwareAG stuff as well), and where SAP seems to be occupying an unusually hot spot in people minds, as well as on the job market. To that end, I've had people ask me if they should pursue topics they obviously love, or "get serious" and go for the bucks and opportunities in SAP-land.
To them — and you — I say this: after the
excitement of the big paycheck wears off, you'll still have to get up and go to work every morning. If you're lucky, in fact, you'll have to do that for most of your adult life. That's why it's important to seek and find work where you can chase your interests, and grow and develop as both a personal and professional, as well as trying to make the best possible living. Some compromises are necessary to make it in this world to be sure, but chasing money alone may not be enough to keep you happy and motivated when the
initial rush wears off. Heed or ignore this warning as you please, however; it is your life (and career) after all! |
