McBride told an audience of tech leaders and investors that they must protect their intellectual property now or risk having their business sacked by open souce-touting bandits. Meanwhile Kumar, dodging questions about the indictment against him by a federal grand jury for his part in the CA financial scandal, said he was in town to tout his skills as a mentor for young technology companies. "There's plenty of money running around out there," he said. Back in the sunny part of our country, none of the attendees at VORTEX 2004 in Santa Barbara had a kind word to say about the Bush Administration's handling of the IT industry. But it's also true that few in attendance were gushing about John Kerry. * NEWS FROM ETRE CONFERENCE, CANNES, FRANCE: SCO's McBride warns of open source 'wild west', 10/12/04 Protect your intellectual property now or risk having your business sacked by open souce-touting bandits, The SCO Group President and CEO Darl McBride warned an audience of tech industry leaders, analysts and investors at the Etre conference in Cannes on Tuesday. <http://www.nwfusion.com/news/2004/1012etresco.html?nl> Former CA chief Kumar appears in Cannes, 10/11/04 Former Computer Associates Chairman and CEO Sanjay Kumar Monday made a surprise appearance at the Etre technology conference in Cannes, three weeks after his indictment for securities fraud and obstruction of justice. <http://www.nwfusion.com/news/2004/1011etrefor.html?nl> Enterprise security is worst ever, experts say, 10/13/04 Despite the number of IT security products and services cramming the market, businesses are more exposed than ever to emerging threats, according to industry experts speaking at the Etre technology conference in Cannes. <http://www.nwfusion.com/news/2004/1012etreent.htmlnl * NEWS FROM VORTEX 2004, SANTA BARBARA, CALIFORNIA: Kerry crowd drowns out Bush backers at IT show, 10/11/04 If President Bush needs broad backing from technology thought-leaders to win re-election Nov. 2, he'll have to change a lot of minds that today are convinced his administration has been bad for the IT industry. <http://www.nwfusion.com/news/2004/101104vortex.html?nl> * FROM TELECOM '04, LAS VEGAS: Changing telecom industry meets in Vegas, 10/11/04 U.S. carriers and infrastructure providers are gathering this week at the Telecom '04 trade show in Las Vegas amid rapid changes in the telecommunications industry, including cable companies roaring into the voice business and phone companies switching on TV services. <http://www.nwfusion.com/edge/news/2004/1011telec04.html?nl> Verizon, Comcast execs slam regulation, 10/11/04 Cable met telecommunications Monday at the Telecom '04 trade show in Las Vegas as the top executives of Verizon and Comcast both urged decreased regulation of communications in a joint keynote appearance. <http://www.nwfusion.com/edge/news/2004/1011verizon.html?nl> * UPCOMING TRADE SHOWS (Oct., Nov., Dec.): Gartner Symposium/ITxpo 2004 Oct. 17-24, Orlando, Fla. <http://www.nwfusion.com/nltradealert446> Fall VON (Voice on the Net) Oct. 18-21, Boston <http://www.von.com/> CTIA Wireless & Entertainment 2004 Oct. 25-17, San Francisco <http://www.wirelessit.com/> Digital ID World Oct. 25-28, Denver, Colo. <http://www.digitalidworld.com/> Storage Networking World, Fall 2004 Oct. 25-28, Orlando, Fla. <http://www.snwusa.com/> NGN 2004 Conference Nov. 1-5, Boston <http://www.bcr.com/ngn/> Oracle OpenWorld Dec. 5-9, San Francisco http://www.oracle.com/webapps/events/EventsDetail.jsp?p_eventId=17563> * FREE NETWORK WORLD TECHNOLOGY TOURS: Network Security: Structuring an aggressive defense Nov. 9 - Dec. 1, at a city near you <http://www.nwfusion.com/events/security/index.html#overview> Will it be an enterprisewide attack that suddenly shuts you down?
