HOLDOUT LANDOWNERS ATTORNEY SUES STATE, FEDS
Holdout homesteader Jesse Hardy is stepping up his fight to stay on his land in the
middle of an Everglades restoration project. An attorney for Hardy filed a 43-page
lawsuit this week in U.S. District Court in Fort Myers against state and federal
agencies planning the restoration of Southern Golden Gate Estates in rural Collier
County.

COLLIERS STRICT RULES KEEPS SOME FROM EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
When Nicholas Potter signed up for marching band his senior year, he knew he wouldnt
be playing on the gridiron. The reason? Based on Collier Countys stricter eligibility
policy, Nicholas cant play in the marching band because his grades fell below a C
average last semester. But if he lived in Lee County or elsewhere, he could have
participated under state guidelines, which are more lenient than Colliers. His isnt
an isolated case.

COLLIER SHERIFF GIVES BACK SOME MONEY TO COUNTY
Collier Sheriff Don Hunter is giving $1.4 million of his fiscal 2004 budget back to
Collier County officials. This is the latest twist in the seemingly never-ending
battle between the Sheriffs Office and Collier County Commission. Hunter had
requested $2.5 million more for fiscal 2004 beyond his previously approved $104
million budget so he could meet payroll.

EIGHTH HANDICAPPED-ACCESSIBLE VAN STOLEN
Fortunately for Judy Gilzow, she can walk a little bit. Not for very long, and not
very quickly, but she can walk. So when she walked outside her doctors office in
Naples on Thursday to find her handicapped-accessible van had been stolen, she was
upset. But because she can walk and drive a regular car if she has to, she realized
she wasnt left as helpless as the five other people who have had their vans stolen as
well.

IN PERSPECTIVE:
White House Watch: So much for unity
Uh-oh. Vice President Cheney, the scowling sidekick to the newly re-elected president,
is throwing around the m word. By getting 51 percent of the vote a broad,
nationwide victory President Bush, said Cheney, has a mandate to use his power to
further his objectives. Bush, who ran a divisive campaign just as Sen. John Kerry did,
now claims exuberantly that he has the will of the people at his back. There goes
our hope for unity.

IN FLORIDA
SLOT MACHINE FOES SAY LOSS AT POLLS WONT STOP THEIR FIGHT
Opponents of slot machines at South Florida race tracks and jai alai frontons Friday
said passage of Amendment 4 wont stop them from fighting to stop an expansion of
gambling. They point to a pending court challenge, the possibility of another lawsuit
and even going back to voters across the state to ask them to change their minds, as
high-speed rail opponents did.

IN NEAPOLITAN:
ANTIOCHIANS IN NAPLES CELEBRATE NEW FACILITY, GROWING CONGREGATION
Under a pitched white tent nearly 200 in folding chairs pray, fanning themselves from
the mid-morning heat. Its a far cry from the cramped room this group started in, yet
still a long way from where it wants to be. Everythings coming together and happening
quicker than anyone ever dreamed. When churches across the country and the world are
dealing with decreasing numbers and atrophy in its pews, the Antiochian Orthodox
Church of North America seems to be basking in the glory of God.
