ICANN is expected to put out a request for proposals for a company to run the .net domain. Most people don't know that when ranked by number of hosts connected to the Internet, .net is the largest top-level domain. It's critical to the operations of many an online venture. A failure of .net could disrupt a third of all e-mail traffic and cause hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost e-commerce revenue every minute. In other words, whoever wins this ICANN bid will have the Internet by the hoo-hahs. Competition heats up for key piece of 'Net infrastructure <http://www.nwfusion.com/news/2004/111504dotnet.html?net> Cisco to buy mgmt. start-up, with eye toward network unity Cisco built its network gear empire, in part, by acquiring lots of different small companies that had good technology. The problem is that it becomes difficult to manage all those diverse pieces in a uniform way. Cisco's solution? Buy another company. <http://www.nwfusion.com/news/2004/1117cisbuy.html?net> Petco settles charge it left customer data exposed The Federal Trade Commission has reached a settlement with pet food retailer Petco Animal Supplies of charges that the company's Web site violated federal law by making deceptive security claims. <http://www.nwfusion.com/news/2004/1117petcosettl.html?net> Four vendors team up on new standardized Linux Four small Linux vendors have joined together to create a new Linux Standard Base 2.0-compliant binary set that they hope will attract independent software vendors and hardware makers to port their wares to the new code. In an announcement Wednesday, Conectiva, MandrakeSoft, Progeny Linux Systems and Turbolinux said they will share the core binaries in an effort to gain wider use of their products. <http://www.nwfusion.com/news/2004/1117fourvendo.html?net> Today on Layer 8, where C is for cookie and it's good enough for me: Trial unveils how top spammer worked; Texas schoolchildren RFID'd; no more skipping commercials via Tivo; and Houston man promotes Internet hunting; all this today and more at your home for not-just-networking news. <http://www.nwfusion.com/weblogs/layer8/?net> ______________________________________________________ To contact: Jeff Caruso Jeff Caruso is managing editor of online news for Network World.
