Given that a pair usually worked with a long line, there would be 
nothing to require a particular motor and butty to be paired - and 
accounts such as the Mike Baldwin 'Working Waterways' series show 
engines often failed and crews were often re-assigned to a boat with a 
working engine. Jan Deuchar and the hNBOC website should be the 
authorities on what existed!
