Might be worth scoping the genny output - if it's lost a pole and is 
producing half wave AC, I know from experience that transformers don't like 
that at all.
(Technical bit - it was a dimmer using back to back thyristors, one of which 
went OC. Killed pinspot transformers very quickly.)
I've always been a bit wary of running amps from small generators on the 
basis that the output waveform is often less than perfect.
