Nooooo!  For safety the bridge *must* be swung out of the way of the boats. 
If you get pushed under the bridge on rising (easy with the turbulant water 
flow) then you will get the boat crushed under it - and a full length NB 
couldn't do it with the bridge there anyway.  ISTR the BW sign says to open 
the bridge before using the lock.  No LSCC user would swing the bridge over 
the lock while a boat was using it.

I agree one need to watch out for the left hand turn (unless you want to go 
up the R.Beam - nice sheltered moorings, if you don't go too far.)
