Quisling? Blimey Bruce that's a strong word!
I've spent several hours with the man and by no stretch of the
imagination would I categorise him as such.
What I can say is that he is in a very difficult position. On one
hand he has to stroke the Golden Goose to make sure that he
remains collegiate enough within Defra to hold his job (remember,
Defra is in effect the major shareholder) and on the other he has
to find ways to live within the budget cuts forced on him and on
the other (yes, I know, he only has two hands - I said it was
a difficult position) he is unable to give his views in public.
Personally, I find this situation to be unacceptable. The CEO of
public corporation charged with looking after an important part
of our heritage is unable to speak his mind because some
inexperienced Ministers, niaive in the ways of business, are
concerned about their political future. IMO, that is a clear
conflict of interest.
At least until we have won the battle, could we please recognise
that the enemy is based in Whitehall not Watford.
Cheers
