I have to say that I am looking forward enormously to July 1st. It was
wonderful, on my trip to Ireland last year, to go into a pub and be able
to breathe clean air.

So am I. Although I'm an "awful born-again non-smoker" as my oldest mate calls
me, strangely enough smoky pubs never bothered me. This could be because it's
all I ever knew in my formative years. Smoky "anywhere else" did though. I once
stood up in an Indian restaurant & @ the top of my voice complained about the
woman who had sat next to me, lit an impossibly long 'girly' cigarette, blew
the first puff straight in my face then placed the burning fag in an ashtray
while she perused her latest photos from the chemist, still with the docket &
elastic band around the wallet. All this when I was two mouthfuls into my
vindaloo. The waiters rushed over all concerned @ the deathly hush of all
others in the place. At my question of "Why don't you seat her somewhere else?"
My wife bellowed out, "Put her in the back yard!" I almost cracked a grin @
that point!
Smokers in public enclosed places, quite rightly, will
from July 1 be consigned to history along with foxhunters & bear baiters.
For me though, I wonder why England is seemingly faced with so many protests
@ this forthcoming ban? Perhaps because it's so close to home [in fact it *is*
home] that stories of 'undercover snoopers' & the like are proliferating like
there's no tomorrow. The doom & gloom merchants were proved wrong in all other
civilised countries where bans were brought in. Admittedly there was a brief
dip in profits while people vented their anger @ being 'told what to do' but
Ireland's pubs are back up to previous levels of profit as more & more people
experience a clean atmosphere within their drinking/eating establishments. Too
late for Roy Castle but not for the rest of us!
