Sounds like the backchannel in the fens that carries water south to be drunk
in Essex etc. while all the rivers that feed it flow north.

The Chicago and Saitary Ship Canal was built to REVERSE a rivers flow
so that sewage would flow into the Illniose river instead of lake michigan
