Yes, they got rid of the towpath so now you can go down the middle rather than
along one side. However the keepers have told me that after rain the water
levels on the Harecastle pound rises by enough to take fancy chimneys off - if
they are left on. I watched one boater taking his boat roof-works apart in
front of us in the tunnel - it would have been funny except that he was first
of a number going through and the bugger behind us was climbing up our a***
yelling for us to get on with it in that way that some of our round-the-ring
hurry up boaters seem to have adopted as their contribution to boating bliss.

Is it my imagination or is Harecastle much higher in the middle than
when I was a lad in the 70s? As I recall you used to had to steer
looking down the side of the boat not over the top. Of course this was
wise anyway as there were still a few bit of towpath waiting to catch
the unwary.
