There used to be a lock on the Lea navigation that used ropes to open/close 
the bottom gates. Is the rope trick still in use there?

At least is still has a set of paddles still in place! ;-)

I don't know what all the fuss is about, do boaters not carry any spare rope 
and a spade nowadays?
