Hi Brian and All,
Thanks for the above. I have just received the following good news. 18.00
ish GMT
"Hello all
I have just spoken to EA and latest level of Avon at Evesham was 3.01m at
16.00hrs and is expected to peak at 3.04m around now before starting to fall
back. The band of weather due later this evening is not expected to be as
problematic as yesterday but advice is to monitor the situation. The flood
warning appears to be still in place for the Avon as issued at 01.00hrs. No
warnings in place for the River Isbourne."
To show how serious this risk was/is, I enclosed an email I received earlier
from the Managing Director of Wychavon District Council.
Dear Councillors,
Staff have been working here at the Civic Centre and at locations around the
district since late this afternoon. We put actions in place for setting up
rest centres at Evesham , Pershore, Droitwich, Sedgeberrow and Broadway but
there has been no need to activate these. We have now stood down the staff
but they remain on stand-by.Sandbags have been delivered to areas where the
flooding was most imminent e.g Sedgeberrow and Broadway. Our normal sandbag
policy is in operation. Sandbags can be collected at the usual locations
a.. Civic Centre, Pershore ( front of building)
b.. Front of Contact Centre, Evesham
c.. Lido Park car park , Droitwich Spa
d.. Council depot, Furlongs, Droitwich Spa
Thanks to Members who have helped us this afternoon in the most affected
locations. Many thanks as well, of course, to all the staff.
The weather forecasts tonight appear to show freezing conditions. We
expect further rain over the weekend especially on Sunday and we will be
monitoring the situation closely over the next 24 hours.
And one from WDC Cabinet Member for Environment
Things were touch and go up until midnight last night in Sedgeberrow and
Hinton. The July flood peaked at 6 brick courses from the top of the
new bridge and I am told we were up to 9 courses last night, so fairly
close!
Another problem again this time was the deep floodwater
collecting/running across highways, and I know of at least one vehicle
in my area that ended up in the ditch, but there were no flood signs at
that time, so I reported this to the police. I imagine Highways were
inundated with call for this too.
The EA Floodwatch people were also in Sedgeberrow all evening - not sure
if that was comforting or not! I met the local police officer there
too.
Steve's/Tony Jones's guys were there brilliantly co-ordinating
operations for which I am very grateful and sandbags were placed in 3
accessible locations in the village. I would also like to thank the
other officer who lives in Sedgeberrow who was on standby for the
village hall just in case she was needed. Also, my thanks to other
staff who were doing their invaluable bit behind the scenes and
preparing for another possible emergency.
I have been told that Sedgeberrow people are very grateful for the
Wychavon and WCC help given last night. I also enjoyed my trip on the
big lorry - directing operations!!!
The headteacher in Sedgeberrow was also very helpful.
Hinton seemed to just miss it too, although there is a broken culvert in
a field on the top of the hill in that village which was causing a
serious problem for one house, which, I was told had been flooded 15
times in an 18 month period as a result. I sent them to get sandbags
from Sedgeberrow as the water was about 3inches from going in their
house when I arrived.
I visited Charlton in the evening which was flooded badly in one area of
the village, but the water was not entering houses at that time, I
suppose it may have got worse up to midnight.
I will be going out later today to make sure as many as possible are
prepared for Sunday (although I understand it won't be so bad), and to
see if there were any issues. There is a problem with the flood warning
calls from the EA as I understand it didn't work as it should have done
yesterday, and households at serious risk did not receive the call they
signed up for, so this needs to be addressed by them.
I know about Broadway, but I have not heard that there were major
problems elsewhere in the District.
Let's hope tomorrow passes without any serious problems for everyone
across the district.
Regards,
Andrew
