Sorry - I was going from the water build up to the Tide but as you say the buildup is not the standing wave. Incidentally one bugger did us at Ellesmere tunnel with his Soliton. Coming past the meres he was catching us at what was an unbelievable rate (5mph+ over the water on his hire boat). We planned to get him round after the tunnel and had turned into it just as he came round the bend and, at the sight of the tunnel, slammed the anchors on. His Soliton continued however, picked up our back end entering the tunnel, and slammed it against the tunnel side. Luckily the wall is very soft crumbly brick so the bang did no real damage. We pulled in beyond the tunnel to let him round - then had to wait a long time for chummy to crawl through and round us. Then off he went again, engine screaming - we listened to it going down then up past moored boats right past Ellesmere before we moved off again about 5 minutes later along a very rough canal.

Both this and the original quote sound more like hydraulic damming, where the channel constriction causes the water to pile up and possibly overtop the banks. The Severn Bore is a similar phenomenon. All the best Bruce There are no strangers on the cut, only boaters we've yet to meet. ------------------------------------ Yahoo!
