My brother - a continuous cruiser - has kept a log since the early,
land-bound stages of repairing his first boat, i.e. since before she was
capable of 'cruising' anywhere! Ten years or so after the event it
makes fascinating reading: comments made by passing boats/bystanders,
acerbic observations on idiotic manoeuvres observed, the time the cabin
collapsed, times when the boat was cast adrift while we were off buying
food, locks which caused persistent difficulty on entry, etc. It's
also quite useful to refer back to before travelling a given route
again, in order to remind oneself of the likely tight points and danger
zones, not to mention the location of pump-outs and water points and the
likely cruising time needed for a journey between any given town and
another.
