Similar but slightly different: at Stanground the problem is the original lower 
gate cill from before the chamber was lengthened at the lower end (from about 
48ft to something comfortably in excess of 70) which was left in situ, and is 
only about 2ft 3in below lower water level. Most (ex-)working boats (unless 
loaded) being rather deeper than this at the back but rather shallower at the 
front, it makes sense to go down the lock backwards. It also helps you get 
under the rather low footbridge across the chamber.
