When we were on the Lancaster in 2007, we had to return home the day after we crossed the Ribble Link, and arranged to leave the boat at Arlen Boats, the hire base right at the Preston end of the canal. Although it is right into Preston, it is in a secure off-line basin which is kept locked. Although the owners are not on site all the time, there are one or two residential moorers in the basin, so there is someone about most of the time. Their charges were quite reasonable - from memory about £20 or £25 per week - a mere fraction of what BWML will charge for equivalent moorings. Des Barnard nb Farne
