Remember that going to Llangollen, the tunnels and aqueducts are
narrow, and the flow is quite fast - my GPS gave me doing 0.8mph
over the aqueduct! and I almost stopped at the west end of Chirk
tunnel.

Our first hire was on the Llangollen. We got good instruction from Maestermyn
Cruisers. Two essentials:

Upstream, don't try and beat the current by going for more revs: just puts the
front of the boat up and you make no more progress.

Forget normal canal etiquette at bridges and other narrows of one each way -
always give way to downstream traffic, as they can't stop and hold a straight
line because of the current whereas upstream you can just sit with enough revs
to keep you stationary against the current. We got berated on the way to
Llangollen by one "experienced" boater for waiting for a downstream boat; on
the way back we got behind a line of boats across the canal because someone had
tried to wait for someone coming upstream and we all ended up across the canal.
First and only time I fell in, trying to punt clear from the gunwhale.
