To be fair I've not been following all of this thread, but after reading the 
latest replies I was wondering whether a virus/malware/spyware can had been run 
to rule out that side of things?

  Since I did that and found my readings were above expectations- I have ceased 
to worry about the physical connection possibilities.

  Unlike you - I do not suffer from many drop-outs though.
