I seem to be a lone voice in the wilderness but IMO everybody is getting far
too obsessed with how fast their broadband is and promptly blaming their
broadband whenever they have problems

Your ADSL (broadband) connection is only the first step in a chain and your
ability to connect to and download content depends on other factors as well
as your broadband speed.

You might have a twenty zillion megabits broadband connection that's up and
running perfectly but if your ISP's DNS servers are up the swannee you're
stuffed!

Likewise if your ISP's routers are overloaded they'll be pouring a trickle
of data down your nice big shiny pipe

As if that wasn't bad enough, if the content you're trying to download is
hosted on a server stuck on the end of two tin cans connected with string
you might as well have stuck with a modem!!!!

I'm far from convinced, on the basis of what I've read, that the original
problem that started this thread is down to the local ADSL service (which
will, however, be slow due to the distance). It might very well be, it's
hard to tell, but intuition and too bl**dy many years experience in the
business makes me suspect it may be a problem at the ISP (and then when I
consider that the ISP is AOL ....)

All the above notwithstanding, I'd be overjoyed if we got FTTC on the avenue
'cos we don't half hammer our bandwidth (three PC's / laptops, an X-Box 360
and a WII all chuntering away gives it a damn good workout!)
