Cruising to be Champions? 3

Better chance now….

Wednesday 6th April
It’s a sunny but cool evening that finds us moored at Red Bull near Kidsgrove
on the Trent and Mersey Canal.

We spent the Easter Weekend at Anderton, near the boat lift. It was a cool
weekend and we had a ok time with a good few visitors to “Patty Ann”.

Over the last two days we have worked hard for us, working up the Cheshire
Locks from Middlewich to Red Bull. We made our overnight stop just short of
Wheelock, mooring out in the country. Today we did the rest of the locks up
Malkins Bank, and came across John Jackson, the coal man on the narrowboat
“Roach”. He was waiting for B.W. to reopen the second lock at no 63. B.W. had
been grouting this lock and had advised him that the lock was in operation
again on Friday. However they only took the stop planks out this morning,
Wednesday.
John was not a happy man!
The other lock here is one of those that has narrowed with age, so any boat
over 6ft 10 inch is not advised to pass through it. That’s why John had to wait
until the re-grouted one was reopened.
It was a bit of a mystery, as Brian on the other coal and diesel boat “Alton”
had passed us yesterday evening so we assume that he passed through the
narrower lock ok.
John passed us later as we had a brew at Hassall Green. Carole went into the
shop there and came back saying that the range of wine didn’t seem to be as
extensive as it was 3 years ago when we last passed this way.

Better chance now of winning the league. Over the weekend Southport beat
Harrogate and Northwich while Fleetwood beat Droylsden and then lost at
Workington, so as it stands now Southport are top of the league by 2 points
with a game in hand…. We have 4 games to play, Fleetwood 3.
