Just back from a successful trip up the Ribble Link. New item to check in the weekly check list - flexible coupling. Fortunately we spotted the sheared bolt and two nuts lying in the bilges before we set off down the Douglas, and replaced the coupling.
The tidal journey is surprisingly quick, despite going against the current most of the way. We took 2 hours for the 8 miles, which is not a record. Scariest bit - coming out of Tarleton lock and finding we could make no headway. Quick reverse cleared the prop and then off we went... very slowly on full throttle for the first mile where the river is narrow and the current strong. Windiest bit - Savick Brook, where it is supposed to be possible to get a 70ft boat through, but interesting enough even with a little 42footer. I think a 70ft boat might touch both mud banks at the same time. Lifeboat men - very friendly and helpful, especially to the boat that broke down on our crossing day. Weather - it was perfect, only a light breeze and a few ripples on the ribble. I'm told it's not always like this. David @boatmoving.org.uk
