Hi Terry... About 5 years ago, we did Warwick to Stratford, then down the Avon to Tewkesbury, up the Severn to Stourport, then back to Warwick via BCN and the North Stratford.
The whole thing was quite delightful; however, the Severn is quite boring--in either direction. Between Tewkesbury and Worcester, the only 'safe' mooring (speaking as a hirer) is at Upton, and of scenery, there is none. The Severn's banks are quite high, and given the low point of view from a narrowboat, all you can see is the occasional church spire. We overnighted on the Severn at Upton and Worcester. We had no difficulty on the Avon, overnighting in Evesham and Pershore. The only difficult spot I can see would be the junction of the Avon and Severn at Tewkesbury., especially if you are going down the Severn. There is a fair bit of current there, if I remember correctly, and I believe there is a spit extending out from the channel from the Avon lock to the Severn, so you can't cut the corner to get in. going out there's no problem. Other frequenters of either river will probably be able to offer more and more recent advice...perhaps Andrew Dyke might wish to chime in?
