I'd have no real worries about doing it in either direction under normal 
conditions - and if either river was seriously in flood I'd tie up and wait 
anyway. But I suppose that all other things being equal there's a case for 
going down the Severn and up the Avon: the Severn being a wider straighter 
(and, let's face it, less interesting - as others have pointed out!) river you 
won't have to worry about going round blind bends with the current or finding 
enought width to turn round and moor facing upstream.

We liked the Anchor Inn in Wyre Piddle where you can tie up to the pub garden 
and sit outside on the terrace with a good view of the river.
