Before the Maesbury bit opened you could hire a dayboat on it. We did and 'moored for lunch' on the silt bank in centre channel below the bottom lock. There was no need to actually move to the side as we were the only boat moving on the canal then and the locks were not in use. Apart from there the pound was deep and wide (as this was before they messed it up with all the wider towpaths and eco stuff). When that came they even dug the millions of primroses up that used to flower each spring in the old towpath to make way for a solid towpath with new soil and grass seed alongside.

Whitehouse Tunnel was the bad one for Bream - my three return passages last year were timed at 15-18 mins upstream, 2-3 downstream. Getting off and pulling made little difference, about a minute or so. Concur with positive comments about the Mont, and barring the exit from the last lock before Maesbury I had no depth problems. If you are in exploring mode, the Carreghofa and Vyrnwy Aqueduct area is canal heaven as far as I'm concerned and I hope to be around long enough to take a boat through there.
