If the gate is one of the top gates it could be about 30 years old. During the restoration work in the early 80's a number of gates were fitted towards the top of the flight. They were made of galvanised steel with wooden faces and had cranked top beams as a "safety" feature. Thankfully the beams were removed and replaced with straight ones before the flight was re-opened. However even though the gates had been fitted many of the pounds were not in water and this must have caused havoc with the gates and faces.
