If the gate is one of the top gates it could  be about 30 years old. 
During the restoration work in the early 80's a number of gates were 
fitted towards the top of the flight. They were made of galvanised steel 
with wooden faces and had cranked top beams as a "safety" feature. 
Thankfully the beams were removed and replaced with straight ones before 
the flight was re-opened. However even though the gates had been fitted 
many of the pounds were not in water and this must have caused havoc 
with the gates and faces.
