10.30am Saturday 31st July 2010 meet at Skipton.                                
     

A scenic walk along the Leeds & Liverpool Canal from Gargrave to Skipton and 
including the Springs Branch (a.k.a. Lord Thanet's Canal) at Skipton.  

Meet 10.30 approx at Skipton Bus Station (OS Ref SD988515) which is situated in 
the 
town centre between West Gate and Keighley Road (A6131) in time to board the 
10.45 bus to Gargrave.  Pennine Bus Service No 580.  There is a pay car park 
adjacent to the bus station, but free parking can usually be found in one of 
the side 
streets (e.g. Lower Union Street area) on the Keighley side of the Pinder canal 
bridge.  

The bus will transport the group to Gargrave centre (toilets are available 
here) where, 
after walking through the village, the canal walk will start from Higherland 
Lock - No 
33 (SD 932545) commencing at 11.10 approx.  It is also possible to travel to 
Gargrave 
by train from either the Leeds/ Bradford or Carlisle, Lancaster and Settle 
directions. 

It is easy walking with a good surface throughout.  Lunch will be taken at 
Skipton 
where there is a plethora of eating establishments.   

After lunch there is an option to walk along the Springs Branch and for any pie 
connoisseurs an opportunity to visit the renowned Stainforths pie 
establishment.   
Distances: for morning walk - 5 miles and for afternoon walk - just less than 1 
mile.
