The Irish inland fisheries board proposes to block the navigation of the River Suir between Carrick and Clonmel (see my web page http://irishwaterwayshistory.com/abandoned-or-little-used-irish-waterways/the-upper-suir-carrick-to-clonmel/) by installing a weir with a magic mechanism for counting fish. Admittedly, the navigation is dreadfully difficult and is used only by small boats; following local protests, the board proposes to install a "canoe pass" like this one on the Medway:
http://www.medwaycanoetrail.co.uk/Porterscanoepass.php It tells me that such a pass can be used both upriver and downriver, although I don't fancy getting an outboard stuck in that lot. Does anyone have practical experience of using canoe passes in anything other than a canoe? And can anyone suggest a better alternative? bjg
