Adding some notes to the discussion: at the moment HL7 is gaining popularity as the standard for medical information exchange within institutions. I think it would be a good thing for Care2x to support it, even if it was just to remove one more reason for -not- using Care2x.
Last week Winfred Peereboom (also on this list) and me have been experimenting with the PHP HL7 API a bit in a hospital in The Hague (The Netherlands), and after getting our PHP library path right ( :) ), the API worked out of the box for sending an HL7 message and receiving it's response. People interested in getting their HL7 component to work can contact me as Elpidio said, and I might be able to help.
