It's worth clarifying that since opensaml is a non-optional dependency at present, it's a burden for integrators whether or not they actually use the the SAML 1.1 protocol. With that in mind there are some alternatives: 1. Make opensaml an optional dependency (easiest) 2. Move saml components into another module with an eye to deprecation/dropping in the future As you say, since I've already done the work, accepting my patch seems as easy as #1. I think there's some value to #2 regardless.
