Dave and all, Sorry to put a damper on this appreciation of Joshua Slocum,  but if I have my facts right, and I think I do,  not much that Mr. Slocum says can be trusted: he passes off as truth a good deal of pure fiction.  I clearly remember an interview with him some years ago, reported in either Soundings or Sail Magazine (I was subscribing to both in those days), in which when questioned about the veracity of some of  "his adventures,"  responded, " If you enjoyed reading about them, you had your money's worth and you have nothing to complain of." A bit high-handed.  But armed with some knowledge of his practice, fewer readers find his writing very interesting.  If he'd just put out his stuff as fiction at the outset, we might have liked him, as we do Melville. But no one likes to be taken for a fool. (I take correction reasonably well.) And may I recommend Sir Francis Chichester's book about his circumnaviagation in Gipsy Moth? Rudy B.
