Well, tf's plan is a decent one, but I always preferred the Fargo.
 
By water is easy to Ithaca. At the north end of Cayuga Lake is the Seneca-Cayuga Canal. Come up the Hudson, head west in the Erie Canal, south into the S-C canal and you're there. Or, come east from the Lake Erie end of the canal, or down from Oswego out of Lake Ontario. All it takes is time.
 
Have a friend who left Ithaca, worked his way across the Great Lakes to Chicago, down the Mississip, then across the Gulf to FL. All in a C27.
