The PO of my '82 had never rebuilt the Wilcox Crittednden Headmate in the 22 years he owned it. Rather than use the rebuild kit for $60 or so, I got a deal from Overton's on a brand new exact replacement head for $110 including shipping. Figured for the difference, it wouldn't be worth tearing it apart. I'm not real handy, but replacement was easy....probably less than an hour. Everything hooked up perfectly. Whatever screws or bolts were from the original installation worked just fine for the replacement....no problems with them falling out of reach, etc. Good luck!

Looks like an excellent day for sailing. Impulsive (1984 27’) is still on the hard, which brings me to my question.
I’m a cruiser not a racer and as such have a marine head w/ holding tank. Wilcott Chittendon head is in dire need of a rebuild. 3 bolts hold it to the fiberglass insert. Does anyone know how to remove the head? I’m concerned that if I completely unscrew the bolts, whatever nut is on the other end will fall away into the void between the liner and hull. I have not found any access point to the liner under the head, so…..
Any advice ….

Another crappy day sailing in Victoria. Regarding motor: I put on a 8hp Yamaha high thrust 4 years ago. After a year I raised the bottom of the cut out 4" and widened it a couple on each side. Increased height allowed me to readjust vertical and increased my speed under power a knot to the 5.5 to 6.5 range. The power output from the motor keeps my two batteries charged -- haven't had a charger near the boat since! I have electric start and remote. Had to put a 4" raise on the transom locker lid, but now I can sit on it and see over the cabin top when motoring.

I also have to say that the mod to the transom to fit a larger outboard is really a minor surgery. I did it by myself in less than a couple of hours. Including pulling the engine to a floating dock behind the boat, cutting the transom with a woefully underpowered jig saw, filling the void with some epoxy to try to keep the core dry, and remounting the engine. Again by myself, a couple of extra bodies would make it really easy.
