I'm probably not the guy to ask.
If John Ebell (HighTide) is lurking, he'd be the guy to ask, or Phil or Chris Desimone (ToyBox).

But offhand (assuming you mean 16 inches in "P," i.e., luff length) I'd be curious as to whether or not the entire sail is smaller in the foot, "E" or roach measurements. Sounds like it isn't, and it would be pretty obvious if the foot were too short, but in any case, 16 inches short in the luff comes to about 13.5 square feet of sail area that you are missing. Projecting the roach up as high as possible as you've described sounds like a very good idea, particularly in light air, but if the sail is proportionately smaller, due to the reduced "P" length, you might not only have reduced sail area, you'd also have less projected roach up there where you really need it
in the light stuff.

That would be a serious liability in a One Design fleet of C27's and also in a fleet of PHRF
boats that sail well to their handicaps.

How are you doing against other boats and do you think the sail is a liability? If it's getting old and the draft stripes look "unfast," then I'd consider replacing it....if it's new and cripsy and has a good shape I'd probably wait a while before replacing it. On the other hand, we finished in the money with a cheap RollyTasker white sail a lot and it was less than 650, delivery
and killer Maryland taxes included.

Agree with your loose footed main thing, sure are much easier to trim
correctly.

Would appreciate your comments, my main which came with my boat is fully
battened and about 16 inches short of the maximum length permitted by
Catalina Specs. Since I race, my guess is that I would much be better off
with a main that was much closer to the maximum height permitted by Class
rules. I raise my main to the top black stripe since in Louisville we don't
have heavy air very often, some years never.
