We hit 9.4 on the Long Beach to Dana Point race. Full main, 3/4 ounce kite, white knuckles (we tried hard to do a death roll doing about 8-something). Lots of 7's and 8's. Missed first in class by 6 seconds.

Keep in mind that the GPS shows you speed over ground - that's not always the same as how fast your boat is moving through the water.

Theoretical hull speed is the speed that the boat can move through still water - has to do with things like hull shape and bow waves and the size of one's private parts. It's something sailboat owners seem to worry about but not something naval architects worry about.

What really matters is being first over the line at the finish - and not being late for cocktails

I was getting high, consistent 6s yesterday on the GPS. We rarely
dropped below 6 all day.

Yup pretty much though with the keel up I used to be able to get a
little plane out of the 22 and it would go pretty quick. The general
calculation for displacement type boats is: 1.34* square root of water
line length in feet. Of course that doesn't mean you won't see say 7
knots over ground or 3 knots through the water. It's basically what
you'd see if you discount waves, currents etc.

Thanks. So, it's about the same as a Catalina 22?

Does anyone know what the hull speed of the 27 is?
