Do not attempt to adjust with engine running. Could be very
dangerous. I use a wrench that West Marine sells to adjust the packing
nut and a pipe wrench. Hold the packing nut with the pipe wrench and
loosen the locking nut with the special wrench. Remember you are dealing
with right hand threads, that is, facing aft, to loosen the locking nut turn
clockwise, tighten the packing nut, by turning clockwise and then hold the
packing nut while turning the locking nut counter clockwise. To make it
very easy you need two people. I have a dinette model and accessibility to
the engine on both sides is relatively easy. I have a friend with a
traditional model and getting access to the port side is difficult.
Adjusting the packing gland is very easy with a person on each side to do
the job.
