Repowering in totoHi Dave, Sorry to hear of your problems with your Atomic 4. I had an RCA 12hp two stroke twin fitted to my 1975 British Built Catalina 27. It weighed 90 lbs and you could unship the engine and take it home in the winter. It purred along like a sowing machine. The engine has been in production for years. I will send you some brochures if I can figure out how to send these via e mail! They also have a 16hp model

I have come to really hate my Atomic 4. Every year I get it so that it appears it will be fine for the season, and every year something makes it unreliable (usually it has been fuel/carburetion, but there have been other issues). Does anyone have advice on what to do to replace the Atomic 4 with an outboard installation? There are a lot of related questions: (1) It seems to make sense to remove the A-4, in view of the added weight that will be carried all the way aft in the form of an outboard. Pulling the A-4 engine is straighforward, but what do you do with the holes in the hull? There is the stuffing box hole, but also, the engine water intake through-hull and the exhaust through-hull (through-transom). I would think that the fair thing to do for any later owner would be to safely close up these holes, but also make it possible to restore them if the owner wanted to reinstall an inboard. (2) What model of outboard is a good one? I have looked at the Suzuki 9.9 only because it is one of the few that still offers a deeper-leg version. (3) I assume that the bracket just mentioned by Dave Techlin would be a good choice-the largest Garelick. I do not have a cutout in my transom like some of the others, so will the transom be strong enough to just take the bracket? (4) What about theft security for the outboard during the season? (5) My times that I have had outboards never seemed to get me to where the battery would charge. I never solved the question of whether the alternator was working properly, or sufficent to charge a large deep-cycle battery. Is a modern 9.9 alternator going to be sufficient to charge a bank of two batteries? (6) What's the favored way to make the installation of controls vis-à-vis remote throttle, electric start, etc.? Mine is a tiller model with the original rudder. (7) The outboard could not draw from the big internal aluminum fuel tank, could it? So does it make sense to remove that? Thanks for any help y'all can give! --Dave Shugarts C-27 #4866 Cahoots (1981) SR, A4, Tiller, Dinette Newtown (Housatonic River), CT E-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Website: http://www.BoatDiddly.com ~~~~_/)~~~~~~~~~~~~(\_~~~~ ~~~~~ (\_~~~~
