My glow plug is in the start switch. Turn the key one notch and let it set 30
40 seconds
then turn key rest of the way to start. Mine fires on the second or third RPM.

It is nice to get much of the same good information from so may different
people. There is a glow plug switch next to the key. 30 sec. is much longer
than I have been holding it. I hold the switch when cranking but only for a few
sec at a time. I will try holding the switch for 25 to 30 sec before hitting
the starter.
Yes, there is a 2 bladed prop ( I guess I will ad a 3 bladed prop to the
xmas list). I suspected there was a techiquen to backing up. I will give it a
try. Thanks
PS The vessel is docked on Keuka Lake (one of the Upstate NY finger lakes)

A "Secret" to moving a boat in tight areas is to... Apply SMALL power for
ONLY a Second or two. Then take it OUT of gear and allow the boat to start
moving.
Then continue with SMALL Bursts of power, in gear, then OUT of gear.. until
you are aligned ..
Also Use as little helm as is necessary..

I recently purchased a 1982 Catalina 27 with a universal diesel engine
and pedestal steering. I have 2 major questions that maybe some one can help
me with.
#1 Once started, the engine runs great however, it will not start on its
own. The batteries are new and the starter seems to crank strong. We need to
give it a shot of starting spray each time we need to get her started and the
engine roars to life. Common sense tells me this in not normal. Has any one had
this issue? Are there any suggestions as to what may be wrong?
#2 We are in a marina and I am accustom to our previous 22’ boat with an
out board. It was easily maneuvered and backed out of the slip. I don’t even
have to back out of a slip with the new boat I just need to back out 25 to 30
yards to open water. Here lies the problem. The boat seems to be very
uncontrollable in reverse. Are there some guidelines to backing up without
taking out half of the marina??
