This winter I replaced all of my standing rigging and the way I adjust the
backstay, previously I had the wires to each corner and the wheel attached to a
old boom vang 4:1 purchase in the middle.
My replacement was a wire rope from the port corner thru a block on the end
of the backstay to the same 4:1 purchase vang, now attached to the starboard
corner. I am amazed at the difference it has made, although I am not sure if
it is just the new setup, or a combination of the new rigging and new set up.
All I know is that now I can really vary the luff tension from ultra tight for
on the wind work , to loosey-goosey for running. FWIW.
