designed similar to what Joe and Ralph have suggested.  It works just fine.

Why not just use one of the Sail Stops (about $7) that fits the mast and the 
“plate” part is threaded for a bolt.  You could get 2 of them and fit a plate 
to them and adjust to the right size and tighten them in place. Then attach the 
compass.

Does anyone know where I can get some aluminum or stainless that will fit into 
the mast track on my '85?  I can cut it to the correct length but the width and 
thickness needs to match.
