Phillip,

Encasing a lead keel in fiberglass is optional. Having glass around the keel
protects the lead from being deformed in a grounding. Lead is very malleable.
Glass protects it. It's a fairly common "yard job" to wrap the keel in glass
when doing a high-end repair job on the keel.

As somebody else pointed out, having glass around the keel to stubb joint is
highly desirable and prevents the "smile" - a leaking joint that can cause
corrosion to the keel bolts.

Hi all
Question: is the keel suppose to be incased in fiberglass. or not? Or does
it matter?was inspecting the keel and noticed some has glass on it and some
has the bottom paint right on the lead.
Do I strip the paint and reglass or just put more bottom paint on?
Thanks
Phillip
