Cary,

Thanks for the information about the word Pupi being a doll or figurine. And
that a small stern deck made to hold them could likely be called the Puppi. It
seems logical.
Interesting that the root word Pupi is the source for ...Puppy, Puppet, Pupil
and Pupa.. as well.

In several of my Ref books, Puppis is the word for STERN. (therefore the POOP
deck would be the deck at the stern)
Just to make sure of it's derivation I did some more research...And came up
with the following... (Sites, on request)

In the Astronomical sense......
The divisions of the large constellation Argo Navis are known as Carina (the
Keel), Puppis (the Stern), Pyxis (Compass) and Vela (the Sails)

In Mythology...... ARGO......was Jason's vessel as he searched for the Golden
Fleece.

So... NOW I can tell all my sailor friends....

I have a fin CARINA..... There's smoke stain on my PUPPIS.... My PYXIS is badly
deviated..... And my VELA is blown....!!

How about that ?

ROFL,
Ralph Ahseln

Here are a couple of the many links for nautical terms.
http://www.usmm.net/terms.html#anchor250830 ,
http://www.history.navy.mil/faqs/faq47-1.htm Most of the referenced
explanations for the "poop deck" I have seen refer to the "pupi" or the
gods/trinkets used for luck on the ships.
