http://gfkitchen.server101.com/GFAlcohol.htm Ralph, The above link was taken from a Celiac web site. As of 2 years ago there was only one gluten free beer brewery which was up in New York as I recall, and was produced for kosher requirements. Tasted horrible..... Also unless the wine was fortified with Brandy it didn't last too long onboard. I spent a few months on the island of Madeira when I was on an oceanographic research ship out of Woods Hole, and I still prefer it to any other wine and have spent many an afternoon at an outdoor cafe in Funchal eating bread and drinking Madeira and girl watching.

But,, When you bring up Beer and Booze.... Well you have my attention.. First off, There ain't no Gluten in any distilled alcohol or wine. What you put in it.. well that's another thing Second: Pusser's Rum (the current Label)...Wasn't/Isn't the "Official" rum of the British Navy ! "Pusser" is a corruption of the word PURSER. The purser on a ship Issued stores to the men..etc.. The word PUSSER was just another British Navy sailor word that is still kicking around.. The LABEL "Pusser's rum" came about in 1979. And then only as the blending recipe. And then, only as the Brit Admiralty's approval. (Use of name and all that) (See PUSSER'S Rum Home page) Thirdly:.... British and American sailors in the days of the Square riggers, preferred BEER... to rum. They only drank rum when the beer ran out ! There were Two beers issued.. a)..Small Beer (think of it as Bud Lite) and .. b).. Strong beer (think of it as Guinness). The beers weren't pasteurized (who knew?).. so the beer would get SOUR very quickly.. There are many Sea Songs (chantey) about "Sour Beer".. In the warm climates.. Strong wine was often issued instead of beer.. Wine wouldn't spoil in the heat of the equatorial latitudes (the sailors didn't much like wine, but what the hell, It still gave the buzz....) Officers drank what ever they BOUGHT, until it ran out, then they drank what the crew did.. BTW.. Officers preferred GIN or Brandy, in most cases. Rum being considered as a Common person's drink. After all, it was the drink of the Black Slaves working in the sugar cane fields of Jamaica. All ...Above being true , but knowing that there are a few doubters on the list (Yee Haw)... references on request.. (is it time for my medicines ? ) Ralph Ahseln "Oblio" Gresham OR P.S. as per the latest "discussion" about whether to Crimp or Solder,,, I betcha I could find 90 percent waterproof failures on the Crimp/Shrink/Adhesive.. folks connections... I always chuckle... Change your thinking, change your life. We are guided, we are guarded, we are healed, we are blessed.....
