Technically it's a rudder post not a shaft.  But who cares it's that big
stainless pipe that holds the rudder.  On these boats the rudder shaft just
slips inside a fiberglass tube and doesn't even have any grease fittings
some people say you don't even need to lube them.  You can coat the post
with Teflon grease or you can get really elegant and inject an epoxy
graphite mixture into the rudder tube with the rudder post in place reduces
slop and the graphite provides lubricant.  You have to drill holes and use
mold release on the rudder post.  If you have a lot of play in the rudder
I'd suggest doing that.  You could if you wanted to put a grease fitting in
the rudder near the top someplace to make it easier to lube things up latter
if you needed.
