Lance, Did you try some head lube to see if that helps?  You may find that the difference in cost of a rebuild kit and a new head on sale is small enough that it makes sense to get a new one, depending on the head.  When I faced this problem, West Marine had one on sale, so I opted for that.  Good luck.
