I would add that a working compass to me means magnetic compass.  It only
takes a loose electrical connection (or worse) to turn your hotshot
electronics into paperweights.  A compass will be working long after that.
Plus, it is so easy to keep a steady heading while at the tiller just
keeping an occasional eye on the compass.  It lets you see wind shifts,
etc..  I love and trust my GPS Chart plotter, but one day it won't work,
that is just the nature of electronic instruments, and that often happens at
THE worst possible time.
