Derek, I have a Rule 750 that I installed a few years ago when the one that came with the boat failed. I think I bought this particular size to get an automatic with an integral float switch. The discharge line from the electric pump runs to the lazarette where it combines with the discharge from the manual pump. Both go overboard through a fitting in the transom. My boat is an 85 with a wheel. The lazarette is not sealed from the rest of the boat. Be careful that your plumbing layout does not allow a siphon situation to start.
On some earlier model boats, Catalina glassed a union or nipple to the hull over the hole. If that is what you have, it should definitely be replaced with a standard thru-hull fitting. In any case, the wheel-operated gate valves should be replaced with lever operated valves. I have both bronze and nylon or some kind of plastic. I don't know which is better but the bronze is much easier to open and close. Here is a link to a website by Judy Blumhorst that has some good pictures and descriptions of thru-hull installations and a lot of other stuff. http://www.blumhorst.com/catalina27/albums/1st-haul-out/1st-haulout-day3.htm My electrical panel is in the cabin and a totally different setup. I have one auxiliary outlet in the cockpit and two in the cabin. As I am making out my projects list for the winter/spring I have a few questions I would like the groups input on. 1. I want to install an electric bilge pump. Any recommendations on size? I was looking at a smaller Rule Automatic unit. 2. The current bilge pump (Whale Gusher 8) looks like it just dumps into the back lazarette. Is this the normal? If I do an electric pump - should it just dump the same way? I intent to run to separate lines for each pump. http://www.opus45.com/pics/c27_transom.jpg You can see where the transom has a drain. 3. I am assuming the boat has factory through hull fittings. Should I at least replace these with brass ball valves? http://www.opus45.com/pics/c27_valves.jpg 4. I would like to replace the electrical panel. Any recommendations on how many gangs to install? Any common circuits that can be doubled up? Also looking to add a few auxiliary 12v outlets, any suggestions on locations that seem to make the most sense? http://www.opus45.com/pics/c27_panel.jpg Here is a link to my list of project - would be happy to hear any feedback or tips on any of the things I am setting out to do. http://www.opus45.com/pics/Catalina_project_log.pdf Thanks Derek Atkin #4297
