As a positive evaluation, consider http://pypi.python.org/pypi/basen It's a small package; based on the comments, I would trust that it works properly. As a negative evaluation, consider http://pypi.python.org/pypi/python-cjson The author is clearly not happy with the evaluation, but based on the number of comments supporting the complaints, I'd rather stay away from it.
