Over the past 2 weeks, I've been helping with Cortland Red Cross swimming
lessons at the Wickwire Pool. After listening to some kind of fledgling raptor
calls for several days, I decided to actively seek them out - and found 2
juvenile merlins with a single adult. They have been a bit stressed for the
past 3 days as 10-12 trees were removed (perhaps their nesting tree also??).
Today both young were perched on the electric wires, complaining loudly, when
the adult flew close, looped the wire, then into a nearby tree. Eventually both
fledglings took off and, after some odd aerial maneuvers, joined the adult and
were fed.
